In this free, interactive class, your child will learn a simple, step-by-step strategy for organizing the plot as they read. Parents are welcome to observe the lesson and see firsthand how Reading Rescue makes complex reading skills clear, concrete, and manageable.

During this live lesson, students will practice four essential reading skills:
Best Evidence
Return to the passage and identify the exact details that support an answer instead of relying on memory or guessing.
Annotation
Learn what to mark—and what not to mark—while reading so that annotations help reveal the structure of the story rather than cover the page with unnecessary notes.
Story Retelling
Use the most important parts of the plot to retell the story in a clear, logical order without becoming distracted by minor details.
Students will practice all four skills with a short, engaging story and several instructor-guided comprehension questions.
These strategies can support students across Grades 3–8. Students will be encouraged to participate at a level appropriate to their reading experience.
THE 60-MINUTE CLASS
What to Expect
FIRST 50 MINUTES
Student Lesson
During the first 50 minutes, students will read a short story, learn the plot-tracking strategy, organize the story’s important events, and practice answering questions with evidence from the text.
FINAL 10 MINUTES
Parent Q&A
During the final 10 minutes, parents may ask questions about:
- Their child’s reading-comprehension challenges
- How the strategy can be practiced at home
- What they observed during the class
- Continued instruction through the Reading Rescue Course
Parents are welcome to observe the entire student lesson or return for the Q&A at the end.

David Marrufo, MA
David Marrufo is the founder of Strategic Study and the creator of the Reading Rescue Course. A former elementary-school humanities teacher and experienced private instructor, he specializes in making complex reading skills clear, concrete, and manageable for students.
COME READY TO PARTICIPATE
Before Class
The reading passage will be provided as a printable PDF ahead of the class.
Please print one copy for your child and have it ready when the class begins. The passage is provided ahead of time for printing purposes only; students should not read or complete it in advance.
Your child will also need:
- A pencil or pen
- A few sheets of paper
- A computer or tablet with Zoom
- A quiet place where they can read and participate
If printing is not available, your child may view the passage on a second device or in a separate window during class.
Parents are encouraged to observe the lesson and participate in the parent Q&A.

Is the class really free?
Yes. There is no charge and no purchase is required.
What grade levels is the class designed for?
The class is designed for students in Grades 3–8. The plot-tracking strategy can support students at different stages of reading development.
Will students in different grades be taught together?
Yes. The class focuses on a foundational comprehension strategy that applies across grade levels. Students can participate at different levels of depth while working with the same story.
Is this a recorded lesson?
No. This is a live, interactive Zoom class taught by David Marrufo.
Does my child need to be struggling with reading?
No. The class can help students who frequently lose track of a story as well as students who want a more organized approach to reading comprehension.
Should my child read the passage before class?
No. The passage is provided ahead of time so that parents can print it. Students should wait to read and work through the passage during the live class.
May a parent attend?
Yes. Parents are welcome to observe the entire class. A parent Q&A will take place during the final 10 minutes.
What happens after we register?
You will receive an email confirmation containing the class time, Zoom information, and a link to download the reading passage. Reminder messages will also be sent before the class.
